Due to the relatively short distance of this first leg, I enjoyed a leisurely breakfast (scrambled eggs, bacon, tattie scone, tomato, toast, juice, and coffee) while chatting with Robin, the other proprietor of Eastbank (wealth of knowledge of Helensburgh, he is). Headed out a bit after 9:30 to get started. A swan and an oystercatcher came by near the route's starting point to see me off.
After first dipping my toes in the Clyde, I fit my feet into a set of footprints at the starting point, took the obligatory I'm-on-my-way selfie, then started off.
Leaving Helensburgh involved going uphill. This uphill mobility actually lasted for close to the first 6 miles of the JMW. But oh my - the view from the top of Gouk Hill, overlooking Loch Lomond and the Trossachs - SO WORTH IT.
After passing through a timber clearing area, I passed through a gate and finally started to go downhill.
Arrival in the lochside village of Balloch midafternoon, checked in at Gowanlea Guest House, then headed to the Lomond Shores complex for wandering and supper at the Kilted Skirlie (broccoli and cheddar soup and a nice salad with fresh greens). It started raining during supper, so I got a taxi ride back to the guest house. Tea and blogging - now time for a shower and pack arranging for tomorrow.
Also seen along today's leg:
A familiar friend - the Scottish primrose
Shovel
Reforestation
Frog eggs!
Amusing t-shirt in a shop at Lomond Shores
