Day 6 - Falkirk to Linlithgow

Back to the trail today.  Spitty rain all day, and the kind of damp cold that sinks into your bones.  Started off by going through Callendar Park, and by Callendar House.

After leaving the wooded parklands, the trail took me past some agricultural land, and then it was back onto canal towpaths, this time for the Union Canal.

Barge on the canal.

Tesco conveniently built right next to the canal path, making a run to a flushie quick and easy.  :)

Many houses along the canal path often had gates in their garden fences that opened onto the path.  The pretty flowers caught my eye as I was walking past.

Looking back.  Long and straight.

The Union Canal goes over the Avon River by way of an aqueduct.

Shortly after going over the aqueduct, I turned off the canal path to follow a narrow and very muddy trail along the Avon River.  Up until now, my energy levels had been pretty good, and the feet were cooperating without complaining.  Navigating the trail in order to avoid slipping and sliding into the river (the trail was REALLY close at times) required a lot of concentration, and this last mile or so seemed to take forever.  I reached the outskirts of Linlithgow, where I then made my way to the 4 star Strawberry Bank House B&B.  After checking in, the proprietor, John, gave me ideas of where to get dinner and pointed out how to get into the city centre (cross the road, down a path, under the train tracks, and through a short alley).  I followed John's recommendation for dinner and went to the Four Marys, where I had Cullen skink soup (PERFECT soup day) and a Caesar salad with chicken, washed down with a Kopparberg mixed fruits cider.  Tomorrow's leg to South Queensferry takes me along the coast.
